2006 Pictures with the addition of the 75 Spanish
2008 Pictures Hilltop Farm Goats started in 2005, when we purchased seventeen commercial Boer cross does. We had them for around a year and decided to add some Spanish cross does to our program. Soon we added 75 Spanish crosses to our herd, for the most part they were full Spanish. At first we did not really think we were going to like what we had added but realized later they are what kept us in the goat business. The Spring of 2007 was extremely wet and caused many parasite problems for us and other in the area. We noticed how the Spanish goats tended to do much better than the Boer Crosses and Registered Stock we had acquired. Culling soon began and we were left with around 70 does that performed well including Spanish, Boer, and dairy crosses. We then sold half of the herd and rebuilt our number back up to 50 does by keeping doelings that exhibited parasite resistance, came from good maternal backgrounds, and had strong hooves. We had some wethers and doelings go for show in 2008-2010. In early 2010 we decided to stop breeding for the show program using Boer bucks because we noticed that the full blood and registered kids were consistently being outgrown in the field and the feedlot by kids that were crossed with either Spanish or dairy influence. We looked into several different options for a Buck and decided on one from Leatherwood Kikos in Missouri. We purchased a yearling and are expecting his kids and our first set of kiko crosses in late October. We also have a few Lamanchas that we raise and sell.
